Description
The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication invites nominations and applications for two internships at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Both full-time, 12-week immersive internships pay $720 per week ($8,640 for the summer).
The first is the 2026 Sharon Stark Investigative Internship, underwritten by the school and by SJMC alumna Sharon Stark, a strong supporter of investigative journalism. It involves working in the Capitol Bureau with the Journal Sentinel Madison team covering the State Legislature.
The second is an assigned reporting or visual (photographer or videographer) internship likely funded by the Journal Foundation. It involves working in the Journal Sentinel’s downtown Milwaukee newsroom. Reporters would be assigned to one of several possible desks (local, breaking, politics, business, features); visuals would be general assignment.
The Journal Sentinel offers ample training opportunities through the summer and encourages a nurturing and social culture in which young journalists learn from experts and from each other.
Successful applicants will be:
— An undergraduate or master’s student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication
— Familiar with the work of the Journal Sentinel
— Hard-working and flexible in taking on all kinds of assignments
— Willing to accept constructive criticism and embrace learning opportunities
— Seeking a career in reporting for a news organization
Please apply with a cover letter, resume, and three to five writing samples. For the Stark internship, include an idea for an investigation you might be able to undertake during your internship.
The application deadline is January 11, 2025.
